Barrels aftercare: 48-hour do's and don'ts for lasting curls

By SkyLocs | October 1, 2026

I've seen what happens when locs get the right care at the right time, even after repairs that brought someone “back to life” after a bald spot. With Barrels, the biggest rule is simple: keep your hair dry for 48 hours. In Indianapolis humidity, that one choice does more for lasting curl shape than any product you can buy.

Barrels aftercare tips for the first 48 hours to keep barrel curls smooth and lasting in Indianapolis

Barrels are a quick, polished add-on that shapes your locs into smooth, rounded curls with defined movement. It's a 30-minute finish, but the way you treat your hair after you leave matters just as much as the styling itself. If you're on the East Side, especially along the 56th Street corridor near Emerson and Keystone East, these tips are made for real life: school runs, work days, I-465 commutes, and the kind of late-summer storms that pop up out of nowhere.

The first 24 to 48 hours: the rules that keep Barrels crisp

If you do nothing else, do this: don't wash, wet, or “just rinse” your hair for at least 48 hours. Water relaxes a set curl. Steam, heavy sweat, and getting caught in rain can do the same thing.

Quick 48-hour checklist: Keep curls dry, keep hands out of your hair, and keep products light so your Barrels stay smooth and bouncy.

Do this right away

  • Use your fingers to separate and place curls if you need to. If you must detangle at the roots, go slow with a wide-tooth comb. No brush.
  • Plan around sweat. If you're commuting on I-465 or running errands on the East Side, keep the car cool and avoid pulling curls tight under a hat.
  • In late-summer Indianapolis humidity, a light anti-humidity spray helps. Keep it misty, not heavy.

Skip these common curl-killers

  • Heavy oils, thick creams, and buttery leave-ins. They sound protective, but they often pull Barrels down and make frizz stick around.
  • Constant touching. The more you fluff, the faster you create fuzz.
  • A hot shower with no protection. If you're showering, cover your hair and keep it out of steam.

Days 3 to 7: keep the look, don't “fix” it to death

After the 48-hour mark, most people feel like they can relax. You can, but this is where overdoing it usually starts. I work with a lot of people who came in needing repairs and left feeling put together again. The pattern is consistent: gentle handling keeps your locs and your style in a better place long-term.

If you're a parent, busy commuter, or you work a job where you're moving all day, your biggest enemies this week are sweat and friction. That means tight headbands, rough hoodie hoods, and constant ponytails. Keep your hair up only if you can do it loosely and without crushing the curl pattern.

If sweat or rain happens: Blot, don't rub. Let hair air-dry, then separate curls with your fingers. Try to avoid heat until the curls settle back in.

And if the curls start to loosen a little, that can be normal. What I don't want you doing is soaking the hair and then trying to “save it” with heavy product. That usually creates buildup fast, and buildup is not a friend to healthy locs.

Sleep care that actually works for barrel curls

Nighttime is where Barrels get flattened. The fix is less about fancy tools and more about reducing friction. A silk or satin pillowcase is the easiest upgrade because it protects even if you fall asleep without wrapping your hair perfectly.

Option 1: loose pineapple

Gather the locs high and loose with a soft scrunchie. The goal is “contained, ” not tight.

Option 2: soft clips at the roots

A couple of gentle clips can keep shape without creasing curls. Skip anything that pinches or pulls.

If you wake up with a few curls bent, don't panic. Usually you can finger-roll just those pieces back into place and let them settle as you move around.

Light products only: my go-to barrels styling tips for refresh

For Barrels aftercare, the best product is the one you barely feel. I like light, buildable hold because it keeps movement without turning your locs sticky.

What to use (by type)

  • Anti-humidity spray: Great in Indianapolis during muggy weeks. Mist it, then hands off.
  • Light-hold foam or mousse: A small amount can help tame frizz on the outer layer without weighing curls down.
  • A little shine spray: Use it sparingly, especially if you tend to get buildup.

What to avoid

Heavy oils and thick creams are the big ones. They can make curls drop faster and they tend to attract lint. If your hair feels dry, I'd rather you refresh lightly and then talk with me about hydration options at your next appointment.

When to text me, and when your Barrels are doing normal Barrels things

A little softening over time is normal, especially if you're out in humidity or you sweat easily. What I want you watching for is anything that feels off for your scalp or your locs. If something looks or feels wrong, reach out sooner instead of trying five different fixes at home.

“I was very satisfied each time I came. I lift with no regrets. They are wonderful.”
